TALK DESCRIPTIONS

Bring Back the Pollinators
Scott will discuss the importance of insect pollinators, what groups of
insects provide pollination services in North America, and conservation
actions that can be taken to provide habitat for these essential insects.
Scott will highlight simple steps each of us can take to support
pollinators.

Citizen Science and Invertebrate Conservation
Scott will take a look at how citizen science can help wildlife conservation
programs, and give an overview of the citizen-science projects Xerces runs
to build knowledge of bumble bees, migratory dragonflies, monarchs, and
freshwater mussels.

ABOUT SCOTT HOFFMAN BLACK

Before becoming executive director of the Xerces Society, Scott worked to
protect public lands and open spaces in Colorado and successfully advocated
for protection of old growth forests in California's Sierra Nevada
mountains. In the decade since joining Xerces, he has saved endangered
butterflies, campaigned to prevent extensive pesticide spraying programs,
and advocated to protect bees and other pollinators. An accomplished public
speaker, Scott has authored over 200 scientific and popular publications. He
is recognized internationally for his conservation successes and currently
chairs the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Butterfly
Specialist Group. Scott has a personal link to Colorado: he lived in Fort
Collins for several years, and earned both bachelors and masters degrees
from CSU. Scott has received several awards including the 2011 Colorado
State University College of Agricultural Sciences Honor Alumnus Award, the
U.S. Forest Service Wings Across Americas 2012 Butterfly Conservation Award,
and the 1996 Colorado Environmental Coalition, Award for Exemplary Service
to Colorado's Environment.
