[Pollinator] bizarre orchides ........mais superbe...!

Dear Peter:

Please tell Mr Pittillo that virtually all flowers in this series are real
and remain undoctored. The orchid photos of Calaana, Dracula, Peristeria,
Habenaria, Orchis, Ophrys and Anguloa are all familiar to me. Caleana
(found only in Australia) has an irritable labellum (duck head and neck).
When touched it swings down and carries the pollinator to the column
(sexual organs). You can hear a distinct click. Anguloa is less common in
cultivation compared to its "sister genus," Lycaste (the white nun).

Mr. Pittollo might be interested in our new book when it comes out in early
November.

The remaining flowers are not orchids at all; Impatiens (balsam family),
Antirrhinum (snap dragon family), Aristolochia (Dutchman's pipe family) and
Calceolaria (snap dragon family). Peter Kevan may have more to say about
the Aristolochia. Some calceolarias (all from temperate South America)
became popular bedding plants in Victorian, England. The only species I
can't authenticate immediately is the Antirrhinum that looks like a skull
and the impatiens that looks like two smoochy lips. That does not mean
they are fakes. I just can't authenticate them and, most likely, someone
else will.

Peter
