Greetings to You – Subscribers to Darien’s Guide to the Ballot Propositions,
Yes, we’re coming up on another state-wide election! And, yes – there are some gnarly ballot measures out there, and I don’t mean good ones! There’s that first one on the list (on the Secretary of State’s “Top Funders” webpage <https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/ballot-measures/initiative-and-referendum-status/official-top-funders>): That one“Limits voters’ ability to pass voter-proposed local special taxes by raising the vote approval threshold requirement for such ballot measures…”. And there’s the next one – with the appropriate ID number of 1984! – for a voter ID law that would entail “Increased annual state and local government costs potentially ranging in the tens of millions of dollars to the low hundreds of millions…”.
So I’m glad to have you – encouraging me to work on the Guide and find out the ramifications of those measures that actually make it to the ballot. (Be careful about what initiative petitions you sign!) However, since this upcoming June 4 eletion is a primary election, I’m glad to say that neither of the above two propositions will be on the June ballot. In fact, none of the twenty potential measures still vying for signatures will be on the June 4 ballot. That’s simply because only the Legislature can put measures on the primary ballot, and so far they haven’t.
I’ll keep my eyes open, to see if the situation changes. However, at this point, that’s unlikely. If there ere are no state-wide ballot measures, that mean (very likely) no “Darien’s Guide to the Ballot Propositions” for the June elections. But you can be sure, there will certainly be a Guide for the November election. Several propositions have already qualified (including the very interesting Wealth Tax measure).
I’ll send out that next guide three to four weeks before the November election day. Please watch for it. (You needn’t vote so far in advance!)
So – aside from the helpful subscribing info below – that’s it until October. May we all strive for peace and justice!
Yours, Darien
How to Subscribe, Unsubscribe, and Change Your Subscription Address
If you find Darien’s Ballot Guide helpful, I hope you’ll encourage others to subscribe. How?
To SUBSCRIBE — Email the word “subscribe” (in the subject line or in the body of the message) to dariens_ballot_guide-request at lists.sonic.net <mailto:dariens_ballot_guide-request at lists.sonic.net> .
And in case you want to UNsubscribe — Email to dariens_ballot_guide-request at lists.sonic.net <mailto:dariens_ballot_guide-request at lists.sonic.net> the word “unsubscribe”, followed by your password (if you know it!), in the subject line or in the body of the message. If you omit your password, a confirmation email will be sent to the unsubscribing address.
Note – Do you want to change the email address receiving the Guide?
We’re witnessing a “shake down” in the email providers world, with many addresses – such as SBCglobal, Yahoo, and even AT&T – phasing out or no longer providing adequate services, and now is a good time to find a reliable address and change your Ballot Guide subscription.
To change your subscription address, please unsubscribe from your outgoing email address and subscribe from the new one.
To unsubscribe in this case – as usual, email the word “unsubscribe” (in the subject line or in the body of the message), followed by your password (if you know it!). Again, if you omit your password, a confirmation email will be sent to the old, unsubscribing address.
Also, if the address you wish to unsubscribe from is different from the address you’re sending the request from, please specify that former address (by putting it where you see <address>):
unsubscribe [password] [address=<address>]
(But please, leave out all the brackets – both squared and angled ones. And, remember, the password is optional.)
And again, that all goes to dariens_ballot_guide-request at lists.sonic.net <mailto:dariens_ballot_guide-request at lists.sonic.net>. As you can see, it’s a little easier to unsub. if you’re still able to use the address you’re unsubscribing!

In response to a reporter asking whether he thought we could change the policies of the government by standing up in protests –
“I don’t do this just to change the country. I do this so the country won’t change me. When I am willing to cross the line of how much I think I can love, I am changed. When I am more in touch with what I love than what I fear, I take a stand.... [May we] touch the seeds of courage and love within us for the sake of the world.”
A.J. Muste, civil rights activist and former president of the War Resisters League
