So, the questions is - Does VMS support 12,000+ files in one directory?   How responsive is it?

They're now up on the dropbox:

	CHIMPY:[.DROPBOX.LIST-EML]		Individual file for each archived message here.
	CHIMPY:[.DROPBOX]HECNETLIST-EML.ZIP	The whole lot zipped up

There has to be something where we can just import the messages and has a browse/search function. Sticking all this in an SQL database would be pretty simple with an ORM + Python, but I hate writing web front ends.
