Supporting Roles
           

A raucous ruckus
     was being raised                   
by the Seal Island seals of Point Lobos
     and we were drinking it all in, when
 
a squadron of pelicans,                          
    a hundred strong,   
in single undulating file,
     swoops down,   
leaving us seal-drunk and pelican-awed. And
 
you said, best as I remember,
“Pelicans only get a supporting role  
     in a place like this…”
And your eyes traced the landscape—
     sea, sun, rocks, sand, seal, sky.
It took a moment to sink in,
     these things do; but
 
isn’t that all any of us get—
     “Supporting roles”—
in the great cosmic melodrama?                                
Where the only stars
     are the stars—
and there’s so many of them
     they hardly count.
