Apollo and Daphne, 1622
Solid marble,
empowered by Bernini,
escapes Earth’s bounds,
just as Daphne eludes
the bonds of Apollo’s passion,
wanting to break loose
of his embrace,
yet hesitating, glancing
back over bare shoulder
unbound hair billowing
upward, arms rising,
fingers spread in
supplication, sprouting
translucent leaves –
defying gravity,
the laws of nature,
and the gods.
Unable to resist
the immense pull
of this story in stone,
I circle and circle,
sensing Time’s
harsh breath upon me.
And I long
to deny him, to slip
from his arms,
to dwell, like Daphne,
beyond his grasp.
