Cracks
You have seen them all your life
don’t say you haven’t — cloud
or concrete grey sliced by black.
Nothing comes back from these cracks
not aggie marbles, wedding rings or faith.
The mind sends feelers into them
through standing waters and finds no bottom.
Cracks open promises from your earliest days.
The shadows in your parents’ eyes that
shrank to shrugs, to apologies.
Cracks open at night
and you flap down the hall in your footsy jammies
only to be told not to imagine things
but you wonder, how deep is the dark?
Sooner or later cracks come for everyone.
Which till then we step over carelessly,
thinking it is someone else’s business,
thinking destruction is scenery.
Cracks in the system
that grind us to powder
Cracks in the Constitution, made
from wedges pounded in.
Cracks split our plans
and we fall into a different life
and don’t return.
