We Are Paired

Through the white smoke of our confusion

we forget that the massive cliffs and daunting

oceans of our lives are paired with tiny chapels

and grottos that point us toward what is truly

vast.

The crumbs that we leave upon the narrow

paths are meek attempts at grasping the familiar.

Yet they are paired with songbirds and small

creatures sustained by that very life bread,

inviting us to live what is unknown and enlivening.

The young man walking behind us, and the

young woman kissing us passionately, are paired

with us, and live inside us in our dreams.

And the bountiful mother caressing and swaying

her child with arms that swing with the breezes,

reminds us that everything is paired with its perfect

complement, for we are not walking the path alone,

indeed, we are, always, being held.
