Evolution
I guess we’ll acclimate.
We’ll acclimate to heat,
to rain, to thunderstorm and tornado
to drought, to dying plants,
and to the birds laying dead on land
we said we’d treasure and protect.
We’ll get acclimated to fear, to grief
and to the helplessness that abides
when everything else disappears.
I guess we’ll burn it to the ground,
the whole miracle
of what we’ve been given.
And then, if life is true to form,
Something will rise again
from our ashes.
