On October 29, 2023, beloved poets Ellen Bass, Jane Hirshfield, Marie Howe, Danusha Laméris; and musician Jami Sieber will come together in a live virtual event entitled From Tribe and Fire 2023. A Patron reception, hosted by best-selling author, Geneen Roth, will take place after the event. 

The event will benefit the S.H.E. College Fund, a US nonprofit organization providing full college scholarships to young women of Narok County, Kenya who have had the courage to refuse harmful traditional practices such as Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting and Early, Forced, Child Marriage.

The S.H.E. College Fund began with a poem. In 2006, Kim Rosen traveled with poet Marie Howe to Kenya. There she recited a poem to a group of fifty Maasai girls in a safe house, and the cross cultural communion that ensued inspired her to launch a fund that would help these young women to become empowered changemakers. Since then gifted poets and musicians have joined their voices to help raise funds and awareness for this inspiring initiative.

Of the S.H.E. students, Poet Ellen Bass writes, “I'm inspired by the courage of these young women and their devotion to learning and to building a life that will sustain them, their families and their communities. They fill me with joy and hopefulness.”
