Red Flag Warning
November 6, 2024
A wicked wind blew in this morning,
came from the east bringing fire’s dry mouth
and the mirthless laughter of snapping branches.
Dead leaves whirled in a devilish dance—
a dervish’s empty skirt spinning.
On the clothesline a dingy shirt snapped
like some feathered thing trapped and pinned
to hope’s past, until that hot wind snatched
it loose, bore it flapping wildly into the sky,
part of my torn heart gone with it.
All is tinder now, waiting for the spark
we know is coming, our buckets empty
we watch the distant hills for an orange glow
that will herald the coming inferno.
