Ode To Two Camphor Trees In Front Of My House

Corona of green and yellow leaves,
An enormous broccoli crown
Gleaming in the white winter sky.
Your branches yearn toward heaven,
Your trunks firmly rooted in the earth.
Your rough bark,
An old man’s weathered face.
I inhale your subtle scent,
Lean against your dark brown solidity,
A friend I can always depend on.

Your two siblings across the street
Were cut down a few years ago,
A grinding massacre.
Did you weep silently,
Your roots sorrowing
For your brother and sister?
I hope you’re never subjected
To the cruelty of chainsaws
And live a long life,
For your sake and ours,
As you selflessly grant us
Oxygen to bathe our lungs
And beauty to nourish
Our eyes and souls.
