Ancestor’s Roots

Wind ripples the grass. The stalks bow in
unison forming ocean waves of green and gold

You, too, bend and reach with threads, cords,
deep roots that ripple back through time
connecting you to your ancestors
maybe for millennia
You hold their suffering in your DNA, marrow,
heart, dreams, in your failures, fights and flights

You want to cut that cord. I know you do.
You are afraid because you see them
on those waves of time, unmoored, floating away
The grandmothers and great grandfathers, all whom you
loved and those you never knew but want to love
In that loss you fear you will lose your way
Lose connection to your future

Listen. What you cut is not their love nor wisdom
You cut the anchors
the stakes in the ground
All ways their fears have kept you frozen
with unknown dreads
Their unforgiveness like burrs in
every hug received

Look. When you cut the tangles, the ancestors
can take flight
Your attachment were hooks to their heart
Freed now, they will help you remove
the tangles that keep you from your truest self
They can surround you with
Wings of love
They will free your children’s children
Backwards and forwards, seven generations
They will
They promise
