U.S Caliber M1

A piece — not a gun,
a thing given gender
by confused men,
a thing that lives
to sweat by night
in the throes
of nightmare dreams.
Its slender throat
that can’t be strangled
is cold in sleep.
But its living-dead wood
embalmed by years
of oil of linseed & human flesh
is slightly warm.
It’s silent now,
but in my dreams I smell
its acid breath
& hear its deafening scream.
Surfeited with death
it returns it undigested.
How I hate its feel
against my cheek!
I curse the fate 
that makes me
    lend my sight,
        my strength,
            my care
to this abortion 
of human fallacy & greed.
I’ve seen hands caress
its slender body;
I grow confused & turn away.
I know its anatomy by heart;
its most private organ
is not beyond my reach.
We two are wedded —
    in hate but not my hate,
    in need but not my need,
    in a sin not of my doing.

Una pieza — no un rifle,
cosa a la cual se le da género
por hombres confundidos,
cosa que vive
para sudar de noche
en las angustias
de las pesadillas.
Su delgado cuello 
que no se puede ahorcar
es fría al dormir.
Pero su madera viva muerta
embalsamada por años
de aceite de linaza y carne humana 
es levemente tibia.
Calla ahora,
pero en mis sueños huelo
su aliento ácido
y oigo su grito ensordecedor.
Saciada de muerte, 
la devuelve sin digerir.
¡Cómo odio su toque
contra mi mejilla!
Maldigo la suerte 
que me obliga
    a prestarle mi vista,
        mis fuerzas,
            mi cuidado
a este aborto
de error humano y de codicia.
He visto manos acariciar
su cuerpo esbelto;
me confundo y le doy la espalda. 
Conozco de memoria su anatomía;
su órgano más íntimo
no está más allá de alcance.
Ambos somos esposados —
    en odio pero no mi odio,
    en urgencia pero no mi urgencia,
    en pecado no de mi hacer.
