Bonhoeffer in Flossenbürg Prison
With B-17s roaring overhead,
the sirens of the Third Reich
screaming to the heavens
and prisoners given leave
to seek shelter in the clammy
basement of the jail,
he’s welcomed into a circle
of pious Christians
blubbering their fitful prayers
toward the Almighty,
so he joins the heathens on the roof
who, by the light of searchlights,
bombs, and bright explosions
shoot craps in defiance of the odds,
betting on anything at hand
including their own survival or demise.
There among the ones who do not cringe
before terror or terror’s God,
he finds a fleeting harmony
in what is left of this world
- Bob Jones
