Invocation for the Disappeared in a Time of War

I bring him back this morning, the baker,
with his smell of yeast, with the rise and fall
of his hands creating loaves.

The teacher I bring back with her stacks of papers,
the freshly written stories of her students,
her yellow pencils in the alabaster cup.

I bring back the newborn twins who disappeared
from their mother’s arms, their hands the size
of hummingbirds, their twin smiles. I lift them over
the arch of war and settle them in their woven swing.

I bring back the grandmothers and grandfathers
humming their ancestor songs, scattering stories
of life and love, until all of us are together once again
in this house we all share.
