River Water Prayer - Devreaux Baker

River Water Prayer

We stood at the river’s edge 
as though we were praying.
Took our clothes off there
under the shadows of redwoods.
Everything said return here.
We slipped into the water
as though we had carried
a thirst through generations.

We swam in silence
beneath the great canopy of trees
and the water held us, rocked us, 
created a doorway we slipped through 
where the air was on fire with sunlight
and the wind carried memories 
we claimed as our own.

There was a vocabulary forming  
ancestor talk in the currents 
deep soft vowels
that could have been 
part of the prayer
our naked bodies formed
drifting like that 
in river water.
