Subject: beneficial use of insects in the manufacture of vaccine

Hi all,

There is an insect twist in a the interesting NY Times article on the history behind the creation of the new vaccine against human papillomavirus, which causes cervical cancer, ("How a Vaccine Search Ended in Triumph" By DONALD G. McNEIL Jr.,Published: August 29, 2006)

It states that insects are used in the manufacture of the vaccine made by GlaxoSmithKline. The quote from the article is:

"Its rival, Cervarix by GlaxoSmithKline, produces the same protein, with the same power, in an insect virus grown in a broth of caterpillar ovary cells."

Cheers,

Leslie
