Critter programs set at CDRI

The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute is inviting area residents to
help celebrate National Pollinator Week, scheduled June 21-27, and on
June 27 to watch a hummingbird banding demonstration and to learn about
native bees.

During National Pollinator Week, the institute will be teaching
visitors about pollinators such as insets, bats and hummingbirds. The
importance of these creatures is evident: A pollinator is responsible
for every third bite of food that people eat. A visit to CDRI’s Nature
Center & Botanical Garden will provide lessons on the role pollinators
play in our daily lives. The institute is located 4 miles south of Fort
Davis on State Hwy. 118.

At 8 a.m. June 27 during the hummingbird banding demonstration, Kelly
Bryan will capture, band and release these amazing little birds, part
of a study on their migratory behavior; this program is free with
admission. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the bee identification program will
find Cynthia McAlister describing the characteristics used to identify
native bees, discussing their natural history, and leading visitors on
a walk to watch these industrious insects. The bee program is $20 for
members, $25 for non-members; class size is limited to 15, and
preregistration is required.
