So, you know a little about pollinators and where to look for more
information on how to plant a pollinator garden (www.pollinators.org). But,
how do you do it at your faith-based organization? This webinar will be a
panel of faith leaders that are leading habitat efforts. Each panelist will
talk about their efforts - the good, the bad and the ugly. We'll have plenty
of time for question & answer following each panelist and at the end.
Jim Ruyle, a retired attorney, became an ordained minister in 2004 and has
done pastoral work as a volunteer since. In 2011, he began to focus on how
churches could set an example for restoring land to its natural state. He
organized a group called Back to Eden at the Hillsdale Community Church -
United Church of Christ, located in Southwest Portland (OR), and enlisted
the Backyard Habitat Certification Program and Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc.
to assist the church in starting restoration of its property. Working with
Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO), Ruyle also began visiting Portland
area churches to learn about and encourage their own restoration efforts.
Rebekah Simon-Peter is an ordained Elder of the United Methodist Church.
Rebecca authored Green Church: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rejoice! and Seven
Simple Steps to Green Your Church, and earned a B.S. in environmental
studies from University of Vermont. As a trained and experienced
naturalist/scientist, she bridges the gap between faith and action in care
of creation.
Kakumyo Lowe-Charde, development director for the Dharma Rain Zen Center in
Portland, Oregon, is coordinating a major capital project - converting 13
acres into a new facility, open space and dedicated habitat, of which two
acres will focus on pollinators. He is right in the middle of the planning
and fundraising stage and can talk on the process they've used and how
including pollinator habitat in the plans is not only a responsible business
move, but it communicates that how we live on the land is a direct religious
expression.
