ROADSIDE REFUGE

Put Your Mower Away!

May is a time when flowers start blooming in abundance on roadsides and
these areas can look gorgeous -- or really sad, because May is also the time
when many transportation agencies and landowners begin mowing or spraying
roadside vegetation. Safety is the principal concern, and roadsides must be
managed to maintain visibility and reduce fire hazards. But roadsides are
too important to be neglected in pollinator conservation. Occupying more
than 10-million acres of land in the United States, they provide corridors
between remnant habitat patches, and in some areas, may be the only
semi-natural habitat remaining.

Transportation agencies in some states are already doing great work to limit
mowing to a narrow strip immediately adjacent to the road edge -- where
safety is critical -- and to replant or protect native wildflowers further
away from the roadside. Those efforts are paying off.

Working in Kansas, the Xerces Society's Jennifer Hopwood found bees to be
twice as abundant on roadsides supporting native plants compared with those
dominated by nonnative grass and flowers; native roadsides also supported
about 35% more bee species.

Similarly, researchers in Iowa compared butterflies on native prairie
roadsides with those on weedy roadsides. This work showed that sensitive
species such as the regal fritillary were significantly more common in
prairie roadsides.

Put Your Mower Away
Whether you are a rural landowner with a mile of roadside frontage, or a
city dweller with a 10 foot-long parking strip, you can have a direct impact
on protecting and providing roadside habitat.

*	Mow higher and less often to allow small wildflowers and clover to
bloom.
*	Consider replacing areas of turf grass with wildflowers.
*	You can also remove the pavement itself -- at least in parking lots
and driveways. Check out the website of

Start a Dialogue with Your Local Transportation Agencies
You can make a difference in your own community by starting a dialogue with
state and local transportation agencies. If they aren't already familiar
with it, introduce your local roadside managers to the concept of
