12th annual Mount Magazine Butterfly Festival
Mount Magazine State Park will take flight with activities celebrating
butterflies and their natural habitat during the 12th annual Mount Magazine
Butterfly Festival Saturday and Sunday. All activities are free and open to the
public and designed to provide a way for visitors to enhance their enjoyment of
butterflies and learn about pollination importance. This event kicks off
National Pollinator Week, which is officially June 22-28.
In addition to the Diana Fritillary, Arkansas state butterfly, the
2,200-acre park provides habitat for over 86 butterfly species, including over 375
wildflower species. June is typically the peak of butterflies and wildflowers on
the mountaintop.
Lori Spencer, entomologist and festival director; Don Simons, an interpreter
at the park; additional park interpreters; and USDA Forest Service personnel
will be presenting seminars and hikes.
The popular “Bug Bonanza” will be in the park pavilion from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. Saturday. Professional entomologists, state park interpreters, and
volunteers will assist visitors with live and mounted insects, spiders, scorpions,
children’s craft programs, insect games, and a self-directed activity called “
Butterfly Explorer.”
The Butterfly Festival will culminate with a live concert by Mary and Robert
Gillihan, Arkansas storytellers from Mountain View.
Mount Magazine State Park is located 19 miles south of Paris, and 10 miles
north of Havana on Highway 309. For complete schedule, contact the Visitor
Center at 479-963-8502 or visit www.mountmagazinestatepark.com, or
