Society for Invertebrate Conservation are proud to announce a workshop on
conservation and management of three of the West's most imperiled
butterflies. The Bay, Quino, and Taylor's checkerspots are all federally
listed under the Endangered Species Act. Habitat for these butterflies
ranges from British Columbia all the way down to San Diego, California. The
goal of this limited-invitation workshop is to strengthen collective
recovery efforts by providing a forum for information sharing and catalyzing
cooperation among practitioners working on recovery of each sub-species.
WORKSHOP DETAILS
Cost: $100
Lunch: included
Sessions: January 28th-29th
Field Trips: January 30th
Field Trip A: Coyote Ridge

NtGdZlzsUtt7VbgLZ1VCj4YR-euzqC2rVboZuUF10q9b8r1ydxw=> Coyote Ridge, located
on the east side of the Santa Clara Valley floor, is dominated by serpentine
grasslands that provide habitat for the Bay Checkerspot butterfly
(Euphydryas editha bayensis). The population of Bay Checkerspots at Coyote
Ridge serves as a source population for the reintroduction project at
Edgewood Park & Natural Preserve.
Trip Information: After a steep 900 ft-elevation-gain hike we will reach a
ridge top where postdiapause larvae likely will be abundant and the very
first flowers of the season will be observed. Bring boots for the mud and
rain gear in case of rain.
Cost: $30 (covers transportation and lunch)
Time: We will depart at 9 am and return no later than 2 pm.

Preserve is home to 467 acres of woodlands and grasslands. Using Bay
Checkerspots from Coyote Ridge, a reintroduction effort is being undertaken
at Edgewood to return the Bay Checkerspot to historic habitat.
Trip Information: After a gentle hike, we will enter the main butterfly
habitat area and see the effects of habitat management by mowing. We are
unlikely to see postdiapause larvae. We will also visit the Bill & Jean Lane
Education Center, which is the home to a three-foot-wingspan model of a
checkerspot and two-foot larvae crawling on towering Plantago erecta and
other wildflowers. Bring boots for the mud and rain gear in case of rain.
Cost: $30 (covers transportation and lunch)
Time: We will depart at 9 am and return no later than 2 pm.
