| The FALL SURVEY is now open, if you did not receive your email invitation, please use the web link, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/M8HHD88, which is also on the NY Bee Wellness home page.
We would like to assess the situation for for NON-migratory beekeepers and their beehives. Information may help to determine trends in honeybee health and enable beekeepers to see these trends.
Please complete the survey as best as you can and write any comments you feel that can add to future surveys and improve the NY Bee Wellness program.
All info is confidential, and general results of the survey will be shared and posted on NYBeeWellness.org by the new year.
For the results of the Spring 2015 and the Fall 2014 NY Bee Wellness surveys, please see the website (NYBeeWellness.org). Remember, there are also results broken down by regions within New York State.
Questions? : info at nybeewellness.org
Thank you!
***The results for the 2014 – 2015 Bee Informed Partnership (BIP) National Management Survey are posted. This survey was done in conjunction with the National Colony Loss Survey and represents the management practices of over 6,000 Beekeepers from across the country. |

A blast from the past: Wintering Honey Bees in New York StateBulletin 1054, Authors: Dyce, E. J., Morse, R. A., Cornell University, 1970;
Some of the info is dated, as the tracheal and varroa mite were yet to enter the beekeeping scene in New York for many years, but a lot of the pamphlet is useful.

| NEW YORK HONEY REPORT, Oct 2015, http://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/fvmhoney.pdf : "The season is coming to a close as goldenrod flow has waned, leaving a small amount of asters being the last pollen source in the Finger Lakes and Central region of the state. Production varied across the state with many counties too wet and others drier than normal. Surprisingly, weather conditions during the summer was one of the best years in the previous 25. A good year is around 100-120 pounds per hives, and some beekeepers have reported averages of nearly 190 pounds per hive! The production seemed to be split between the early summer black locust and basswood flow, and the late summer Goldenrod harvest. Temperatures during much of September averaged higher than normal. The larger beekeepers in the state are busy extracting honey, which could affect wholesale and retail prices as supply is greater than demand at the moment. The slower summer months are behind now, and demand should increase with the cooler months ahead. The hives appear in good health, with heavy colonies and the drier weather has assured good pollen storage." |

For most, this has been a great honey year with lots of bees and brood, but also lots of VARROA MITES, there are reports of pre-winter hive losses. Please consider an oxalic treatment.
Oxalic Acid (8.00) and Oxalic Acid KITS (11.00) are available from NY Bee Wellness on eBay Giving Works, for other options or group orders, email: info at nybeewellness.org; you will receive a free "Fight the Mite" button for each order.
December, a broodless period in the hive, is the best time for treating for mites with an oxalic dribble, instructions.

*A note from the Albany (northern NY) area:
Nov. 9, 2015- A first year beekeeper reports: I have three hives and noticed one of my hives has thousands of dead bees under the
entrance. I located the queen and the honey super is full of honey. What is happening? C. Crips (Southern Adirondack Beekeepers Association) responds: I have had a number of people call in that have no bees in their hives after they were heavy just a few months ago. In one case, the hive owners brought the hive in and we were able to examine it. I found a large number of mites in the sample of bees they had in a ziploc bag. We found frass (mite poop) in some cells. Bees that are highly stressed by varroa mites may abscond even though this is suicidal in the fall in the north. If you have not treated for mites and you do not know your mite levels are low, your bees are at high risk of death sometime between fall and spring. If you have not treated, you may be able to treat with something like Apivar strips or oxalic acid. It may not be the best mite control, but may be better than nothing at this point. |

2) "Pesticides and Poisons in the Hive", Reed Johnson PhD, Ohio State University, pages 86 & 87 lists procedure for protecting your bees during a spray event, and how to submit samples of suspected poisoning. An in depth power-point for the layman.
