Understanding all factors influencing bee declines in North America and
Europe is essential to help beekeepers make informed management decisions.
Three years of survey data from Pennsylvania beekeepers were analyzed to
understand how weather, topography, land use and management choices
influence colonies’ overwintering survival.

This study evaluated both land-use and climate effects on pollinator
populations. Better understanding of how different bee species are affected
by these variables will allow better conservation efforts and management
decisions. In this analysis, climate factors were identified as important
predictors of wild bee abundance and richness.

Results from a recent study suggest that growing soybeans near pollinator
habitat may boost yields. Sixteen previous studies were analyzed from
around the world, and the data show that pollination from wild bees and
honey bees can increase soybean yields 20% or more.

Box tree moth, *Cydalima perspectalis*, has been confirmed in Connecticut,
Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Ohio, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Although the box tree moth is native to East Asia, the recent spread likely
comes from an Ontario shipment of nursery plants. Unfortunately, the
Tennessee location where the moth was found is a distribution center. Keep
a lookout for the moth and it’s larvae, which can kill boxwood plants
through defoliation and even ingestion of bark. Read more about efforts to
contain spread by the US Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service

*An Overview of the Potential Impacts of Honey Bees to Native Bees, Plant

Careful consideration is needed to determine whether honey bees should be
established in public areas. While honey bee apiaries do support
agricultural production and help raise awareness of native pollinator
concerns, these non-native pollinators may still bring challenges for
native pollinators, such as disease threats or competition for nectar and
pollen resources. Recommendations are for decisions to be made on a case by
case basis with thought to the location’s unique characteristics.

It’s that time of year: emerald ash borers are spreading. If you would like
to protect any ash trees from the emerald ash borer, it is possible.
Treating trees sooner, before infestation or in early stages before
significant damage is visible, is most effective.

is organizing a regional effort to sample arthropods in hemp. Drs. Kadie
Britt and Houston Wilson (University of California-Riverside) are leading
sampling efforts in the west, and collaborators will be conducting the same
sampling effort in the northeast (UVM) and southeast (Auburn). It would be
wonderful to have the North Central region included as well! Please reach
out to Dr. Britt (kadie at ucr.edu) directly if you are interested in joining
this project.

There are three primary options for aerial imagery for agriculture:
unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV or drones), manned aircraft (typically small
planes) and satellite-delivered imagery. Consider image quality, timing,
and permissions related to drone use to decide which is best for you.

While honey bees can help pollinate crops, especially if native pollinator
populations have declined, adding an apiary does not directly benefit
pollinators. Honey bees are not native to North America, and there is a
chance that they will spread disease or even take pollen and nectar
resources from native bees. While adding a honey bee hive is a great hobby
with sweet rewards, you can help native pollinators by simply adding a
flower garden and including a few native plant species.
