NEW POLLINATOR BOOK
+ WILDFLOWER SEED
= ACTION FOR BEES
The Xerces Society's new book, Attracting Native Pollinators, is now
available. Combine this with wildflower seed from the Society's new online
Conservation Seed Store or a Bumble Bee Garden Kit, and you have everything
you need to take action for North America's bees.

book cover <http://www.xerces.org/imagesforcc/attractingcube.jpg>
Attracting Native Pollinators provides the recipes for pollinator
conservation in any location. Within its more than 380, fully illustrated
pages, the book features:
* Guidelines on how to select and establish the best nectar-and
pollen-rich wildflowers for your region,
* Construction plans for egg-laying or nesting sites,
* Information on how to care for your garden, farm, park, or natural
area in a way that creates the greatest benefit for bees, butterflies, and
other pollinators,
* A guide to common bees of North America,
* Detailed lists of butterfly host plants, and
* Design diagrams for urban gardens, office parks, roadsides, and
other landscapes!
Attracting Native Pollinators, published by Storey Publishing, is coauthored
by Xerces Society staff and Dr. Gretchen LeBuhn of the Great Sunflower
Project. It features a foreword by MacArthur Award recipient Dr. Marla

STORE

When you are ready to take the next step, the Xerces Society's new online
Conservation Seed Store can provide you with quality ingredients to realize
your plans. Working with leading wildflower seed producers in each region of
the United States, the Society developed pre-mixed blends of some of the
best pollen and nectar plants available. Local seed that is not treated with
pesticides is used wherever possible. Currently, the Seed Store offers only
larger quantities of seed (suitable for habitat enhancement projects) but
garden clubs, master gardeners, or groups of friends can benefit from the
wholesale pricing by buying together and dividing the seed. Additional
selection and packet sizes are coming soon, including small garden packets
and butterfly host plants.

For gardens, the Society also offers the Bumble Bee Garden Kit. This
38-plant collection includes ten of North America's best bumble bee flowers,
species such as purple coneflower, purple prairie clover, bottle gentian,
wild bergamot, and New England aster, as well as a native bunch grass to
provide potential nest sites. When mature, the plants will cover about 40
square feet. Suitable for garden settings (as opposed to natural areas) in
most of the country, the kit will provide bloom from spring to fall,
supporting bumble bees throughout their active season. The Bumble Bee Garden
Kit can be ordered through Earth Day (April 22) for shipment during National
Pollinator Week (June 20 - 26) 2011.
